• Toured Kansas Feedlots and Ranches
Fifty Alabama Farmers Federation members toured 19 feedlots and ranches in five days covering more than 1,000 miles. The tour provided an opportunity to learn new cattle handling techniques, health care practices, genetics, nutrition and marketing. In addition, it helped farmers learn that what they do on their farms affects beef when it’s harvested. See photo gallery.
• Volunteered at Junior Beef Expo
Members of the State Beef Committee donated their time to youth beef cattle exhibitors by helping run the showmanship contest at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition (SLE) Junior Beef Expo. The show was sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation and provided over $14,000 in premiums and prizes for more than 140 students. See photo gallery.
• Promoted Value-Added Feeder Calf Sales
The ALFeederCattle.com website is used every year to promote cattle in established board sales organized by members. Even in a year like 2016 when there were fewer cattle marketed compared to recent history, the site was able to help advertise more than 1,000 head of cattle to over 100 potential buyers.
