The purpose of this program is to provide a structured, two-year training program for Alabama residents ages 25-45 that assists with personal and professional development in the areas of agricultural policy, industry leadership and organizational involvement.

Upon completion of the program, participants will master these concepts:

Government

  • How to interact and respond to state government agencies
  • How bills become law
  • How to build a relationship with legislators and understand how they prefer to communicate
  • A foundational understanding of the role of local, state and federal government
  • How to lobby legislators at home
  • How to host a government official or legislator

Federation

  • How the Federation operates at the county level
  • How the Federation operates at the state level
  • Understanding the Policy Development process
  • Understanding why to become a leader
  • Knowing where to get information and how to utilize it
  • How FarmPAC operates and benefits the organization
  • How to be intentional at conferences and events
  • Understanding the relationship between the Alabama Farmers Federation and the American Farm Bureau
  • Understanding the relationship between the Federation and the insurance company
  • How the Destinations Department works to host meetings
  • Understanding the limitations of county Federations related to politics
  • How to create a budget for a committee or board
  • Understanding the Alabama Farmers Agricultural Foundation

Agriculture

  • Global and local trends across agriculture
  • Understanding the importance and impact of agriculture in Alabama
  • Understanding the value of other agriculture stakeholder groups and how we work together
  • Develop a basic understanding of Alabama’s major commodities

Personal Development

  • Mastery of basic parliamentary procedure use
  • Effective communication and speech delivery in various settings
    • Speaking to legislators by delivering testimony, and in one on one communication
    • Speaking in a town hall environment
    • Developing an elevator speech
    • How to introduce someone
    • How to lead/facilitate a meeting
    • How to speak to the media
  • Effective delegation
  • Effective decision making
  • Identifying personal strengths/weaknesses
  • Writing quality thank you notes
  • Effective presentation skills
  • Utilizing available resources
  • Developing a big picture vision
  • Understanding how to be service oriented
  • Effective conflict resolution and conflict management
  • Awareness of potential stumbling blocks and understanding how to avoid them
  • Effective time management skills
  • Understanding of responsibilities as a leader
  • Understanding proper dinning etiquette
  • Understanding opportunities to serve in the organization
  • Understanding opportunities in the Young Farmers Division & how to start a YF committee
  • Understanding proper attire based on the situation
  • How to properly present awards
  • Understanding basic principles of financial and estate planning
  • How to lead and plan for a meeting
  • Proper social media etiquette

Eligibility

The Alabama Farmers Federation A.L.F.A. program is designed for members between the ages of 25-45.

Nomination Process

Participants must be nominated by their county Farmers Federation president.

Selection Process

An independent committee will review the applications and choose participants for the program.
