Mobile County Farmers Federation Earns 2018 Award of Excellence
The Mobile County Farmers Federation received the Award for Excellence Dec. 3. during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th Annual Meeting in Montgomery. To earn the distinction, counties must score at least 80 points out of 100 on the award application, which covers involvement in agricultural programs, governmental affairs, county Women’s Leadership and Young Farmers committees.

Driskell Receives Alabama Farmers Federation Senior Leader Award
Mobile County Farmers Federation member Bert Driskell received the Senior Leader Award from the Alabama Farmers Federation during an awards ceremony Dec. 3.
Driskell has served on the county Federation Board of Directors for 40 years, holding various leadership roles. At the state level, he has been a member of the Alabama Farmers Federation Board of Directors, State Cotton Committee, Alabama Peanut Producers Association, Alabama Cotton Commission and Boll Weevil Foundation.
Driskell received the award during the second general session of the Federation's 97th Annual Meeting in Montgomery, which drew over 1,200 attendees to the Capital City. From left are Federation Executive Director Paul Pinyan and Driskell.
The Senior Leader Award is reserved for individuals who are over 70 years old and have served as a county Farmers Federation president, State Women’s Leadership Committee chair or Federation State Board member.
Fort Competes In Annual Heritage Cooking Contest
Janice Fort of Mobile County entered her recipe for Bacon Cheeseburger Tailgate Toasts in the 2018 Heritage Cooking Contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Federation Women's Leadership Division and highlights a specific commodity. For 2018, pork was the highlighted commodity.
Bacon Cheeseburger Tailgate Toasts
1 lb. ground beef
1 lb. ground sausage (hot or mild)
½-3/4 cup bacon crumbles
1 lb. Velveeta cheese, cubed
3 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
3 Tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 ½ tsp. Oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
1 loaf party rye bread
Directions: Brown ground beef and sausage; drain. Add bacon crumbles and cheese. Add the remaining ingredients and stir over medium heat until cheese is melted. Spread hot mixture on each bread slice. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
*To Freeze Unbaked: place baking sheet in freezer for 10 minutes. Transfer toasts to a Ziploc bag and store in freezer. From Frozen: Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
